Chase Freedom 2020 Quarter 3 Categories - Amazon and Whole Foods!

New Quarter New Categories

If you are a Chase Freedom cardholder, with every new quarter, comes new 5% bonus categories. The Chase Freedom earns 5% cashback or 5x Chase Ultimate Rewards and rotates categories quarterly. Each quarter, you are required to activate the earnings, which will require about a minute of work, four times a year. Luckily, it is easy enough to log into your account and click the "activate" button. Don't forget to do this, or you'll be missing out on some serious points or cashback! The 2020 Q2 earnings included 5% or 5x Ultimate Rewards per dollar spent at Fitness Clubs Gyms, and Grocery Stores. If you haven't done so already, you can still take advantage of these Q2 2020 bonus categories until June 30, 2020.

Chase just announced the Q3 bonus categories for July 1, 2020, through September 30, 2020, which will include Amazon and Whole Foods purchases. Keep in mind these bonus categories have a cap of $1,500 in spend combined, which equals a total of 7,500 Ultimate Rewards, which can be earned. Also remember, that if you hit that $1,500 cap before September 30, 2020, you will only be earning 1% or 1x back after and on all other non-category purchases. When you hit that maximum spend, we recommend switching back the specific spend on to the card in your wallet that makes the most sense to optimize points earning. For example, we will be switching our Whole Foods, and Amazon spend to the Chase Freedom to take advantage of the 5x Ultimate Rewards points, but after we hit our $1,500 cap, we will switch grocery spend back to the American Express Gold Card as to not miss out on those 4x Membership Rewards points. Amazon spend generally varies depending on what product we are purchasing and if we need purchase protection and extended warranty. Luckily, during Q3, if you are spending on Amazon with your Chase Freedom, your purchase will be covered for theft or damage for up to 120 days after purchase and for up to $500 per claim and $50,000 per account. Amazon also has an excellent return policy. This could save you hundreds of dollars if you unfortunately need to use it just once!

2020 Quarter 3 Categories

As most of the world is still slowly returning to the norm after staying home the past few months, Chase was very thoughtful by implementing these new Q3 categories to help earn more points on the essentials such as groceries from Whole Foods and supplies from Amazon.

Amazon - Amazon has become an even more essential part of our life, especially during these past few months. Chase definitely considered their customer's spending habits by delivering these profitable Q3 reward categories. Prime Day 2020 has not yet been announced but is rumored to pushed to August or even September this year. 5x Ultimate Rewards with Prime Day deals sounds pretty great to us!

Whole Foods - After housing costs, a household’s next highest expense is typically food. During 2020 Quarter 3, the Chase Freedom card lets you earn 5% cashback, or 5x Ultimate Rewards points back for the grocery shopping you will be doing anyway. If you spend $500 a month (July - September) on groceries during Q3, you will be able to max out your 7,500 Membership Rewards points

Final Point

One of our core beliefs here at Points Passport is teaching people to earn free travel on the daily spending they will be doing anyway. Everyone has to shop for groceries, and most people use Amazon, why not get a 5% return on your spending? Once you've earned the points on money you would have spent anyway, you can book that weekend getaway you've been dreaming about!

Pro Tip for individuals with multiple Chase Freedom cards, you can earn 5x Chase Ultimate Rewards (up to 7,500) on as many cards as you have. Just for clarification, some people may find themselves with more than one Chase Freedom card after downgrading from an annual fee card such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred. If you have two Chase Freedom cards, you can earn up to 15,000 Ultimate Rewards per $3,000 spent between your two cards. Keep this in mind if you have multiple Chase Freedom cards in your household as well! If you want to learn more about the Chase Freedom card, click here to read our deep-dive article.
