To the Point

Getting your first rewards credit card is a big step toward building your credit history and earning rewards points on everyday expenses that open the door for you to travel the world for free! The American Express EveryDay Credit Card is an excellent foundation to begin building your points earning card portfolio with. With no annual fee and the opportunity to earn 20% extra points every month just by swiping your card 20+ times, the American Express EveryDay Credit Card is the perfect American Express starter card to get into the Membership Rewards Points ecosystem. The American Express EveryDay Credit Card earns 2x Memberships Rewards Points per dollar spent at U.S. Supermarkets up to $6,000 per year. If your monthly groceries spend is approximately $500, you can easily take full advantage of the rewards earnings annually. The American Express EveryDay Credit Card earns 1x Membership Rewards Points per dollar spent on every other purchase as well.

The Points Passport recommends this unique starter card to people who may be currently using debit cards or cash, but are finding themselves wanting a more rewarding path forward. The American Express EveryDay Credit Card rewards cardholders with an extra 20% of your earned Membership Rewards Points, simply by using their card for 20 purchases or more times per billing cycle. This extra earning power really encourages you to leave your debit card at home so you can earn points toward free travel instead!

The American Express EverDay Credit Card has a generous welcome bonus of 10,000 Membership Rewards Points after a $1,000 minimum spend within your first three months. As an added bonus, the American Express EverDay Credit Card offers you 15 months of 0% interest on purchases or balance transfers, which could save you tons of money if you are currently paying interest on a less desirable credit card or have a large purchase that you’re planning to make. You can even take further advantage of this 0% intro APR by putting that large purchase or even everyday spend on it, paying the monthly minimum, and putting the money you would've used for the bill into a high-yield savings account or another investment vehicle. This strategy does require some personal finance discipline, so please make sure you have the full balance paid off after the 15 months! Our goal here is to maximize this offer without letting the interest eat into your Membership Rewards earnings! Most importantly, despite the American Express EveryDay Credit Card is a no annual fee card, it is your key to unlock all of the American Express Membership Rewards transfer partners. American Express partners with big-name brands such as British Airways, JetBlue, Delta, Virgin Atlantic, Hilton, and Marriott Bonvoy, thereby allowing you to utilize your welcome bonus and earned Membership Rewards Points for free flights and hotel stays! This benefit is a rarity among no annual fee rewards cards. There is a ton of value to be had when you're paying nothing but still having the ability to transfer unlike other no annual fee cards such as the Chase Freedom. While this card also carries no annual fee, it does require a Chase Sapphire card to access transfer partners, which will cost you a $550 annual fee, unlike the American Express EveryDay Credit Card!

Primary Benefits

  • No Annual Fee

  • 2x Membership Rewards Points at U.S. Supermarkets up to $6,000 annually

  • 2x Memberships Rewards Points at AmexTravel.com

  • 1x Membership Rewards Points for all other purchases

  • Earn 20% More Points - Use your card 20+ times in a billing cycle and earn 20% extra Membership Rewards Points on those purchases. You must make 20+ separate transactions to be eligible for the extra 20%. This means if you earn 1,000 Membership Rewards Points during the month and have 20+ eligible transactions, you will earn an extra 200 bonus Membership Rewards Points. Keep in mind that certain transitions such as returns, interest charges, person-to-person payments, and gift cards do not qualify. Please keep that in mind when making sure you’re hitting that 20+ transactions goal.

  • $0 Balance Transfer Fee

  • 0% intro APR for your first 15 months then variable APR 12.99% to 23.99% based on creditworthiness

  • ShopRunner: Free subscription to ShopRunner, which usually costs $79 annually. Shoprunner provides free two-day shipping and free return shipping on eligible purchases from participating retailers.

  • American Express Offers: American Express has a constant stream of offers that can deliver you even more value. A few examples of offers that I have claimed are: Spend $200 at a Marriott property; get $40 statement credit. Spend $100 at Harry & David's; get $20 statement credit. Receive 9x MR points when spending at Sephora. I have almost 200 Amex Offers added to my account, and new ones keep flowing in daily.

  • Foreign Transaction Fee: 2.7% - We do not recommend using this card for foreign spending due to this fee. If you’re traveling abroad, check out these 0 % transaction fees American Express cards: American Express Gold Card and the Platinum Card from American Express

  • Purchase Protection: Your purchases are protected up to 90 days and up to $1,000 per purchase and $50,000 per calendar year. Check the current American Express terms here

Value Proposition

At the Points Passport, we like to make the value proposition of the cards we review easy to understand. In order to do that, we break down the value into two parts: the initial welcome bonus and the cost to sustain every year after. Luckily, with the American Express EverDay Credit Card, there is no year after cost because there is no annual fee. Naturally, your first year will be the most valuable due to your welcome bonus!

The Welcome Bonus

Based on our Membership Reward Points value at $0.02/point, the value of the welcome bonus is as follows:

10,000 Membership Rewards x $0.02 = $200

We have seen other welcome bonus offers, including referrals, offers from other American Express Customers, and targeted bonus offers generally only available for brand new American Express customers. Feel free to check if you are eligible for a referral bonus with our link here.

After the Welcome Bonus

Since the American Express EveryDay Credit Card has no annual fee, there is no year-over-year cost of holding it. This means whatever rewards you earn are yours to spend without any fees eating away at your free future travel! To get an idea of what an approximate reward earning year may look like, let's take a look at some average spending:

U.S. Groceries Store monthly spending = 2x MR/$1: $500 x 12 months = $6000, which equates to 12,000 MR.

+

All other monthly spending = 1x MR/$1: $300 x 12 months = $3,600, which equates to 3,600 MR.

=

15,600 MR base on annual spending = $312 net annual profit

Now, let's consider the American Express EveryDay Credit Card's bonus 20% Memberships Rewards boost when you make 20+ transactions in a billing cycle. For this example, we will assume you are taking full advantage of this Memberships Rewards Points boost and making 20+ transactions per month.

15,600 MR x 0.2 (20%) = 3,120 extra Membership Rewards Points, which brings your annual total Membership Reward earning up to 18,720 Membership Rewards Points.

At the Membership Reward Points value of $0.02/point this 18,720 Membership Rewards Points = $374 net profit

To simplify the 20% bonus, think about it as if you are getting 2.4x MR/$1 spent at U.S. Grocery Stores, as well as 1.2x MR/$1 spent on all other purchases. You just need to hit 20+ transitions per billing cycle. That being said, do not make unnecessary purchases just to get that 20% bonus. If you are struggling to meet your 20+ transaction quota, you could always hack it by dividing your grocery purchase into multiple transactions.

Final Point

For a no-annual fee credit card, the American Express EveryDay Credit Card opens up the world of Membership Rewards to truly deliver something different. The Amex EveryDay Credit Card is one of the only cards in its class that has direct access to reward points transfer partners. If you spend approximately $500 a month on groceries (up to 2.4x Membership Rewards Points per $1 spent), and want a maximized 1.2x Memberships Rewards Points back on all other purchases, access to Amex Offers, a free ShopRunner subscription, PLUS a solid welcome bonus, look no further! While there’s no doubt that there are better rewards cards for supermarket spending, such as the American Express Gold Card, which earns 4x Membership Rewards Points per dollar at U.S. Supermarkets, it also comes with an annual fee of $250. The American Express EveryDay Credit Card also comes with 0% APR for the first 15 months on purchases and $0 balance transfers, which can be a huge tool to pay down any credit card balances you may currently have, but now you can pay them off with no interest. This is also an excellent financial tool for any large planned purchases or even some investments, such as a home renovation. If you end up finding value in the American Express Membership Rewards ecosystem as we do, the American Express EverDay Credit Card is the perfect stepping stone to get a feel for what it’s like to be rewarded for everyday expenses.

In short, the American Express EverDay Credit Card has no annual fee, a generous 10,000 Membership Rewards Point welcome bonus, 0% interest your first 15 months, will add to the length of your credit history age, and increase your credit score over time, while costing you nothing and earning you free travel along the way!
